I’m not a thief, I’m a peeping Tom ….

“I did not have my hand in her purse. I was holding my camera so I could videotape up her dress. I am not a thief, I’m a peeping Tom.”

That’s the way King County, WA defendant Richard Sorrells responded to police when nabbed at the Bite of Seattle festival in 2002. Incredibly, the court agreed with him, saying that while filming up a woman’s skirt was “disgusting and reprehensible,” it wasn’t actually against the law. But that defense won’t work now, since the legislature last year amended the voyeurism law to include digital camera phones and other technology. Prosecution is still difficult, however. Watch this space for future developments.
