For anyone who has ever played a cello, or knows someone who does. A rant against Pachelbel’s Canon by Rob Paravonian. Even if you never watch these things, check out this one. Awesome.

    I am truly awed.

And he’s quite right about the same old chords, as we learned when we discovered that you could sing “Amazing Grace” to the theme from Gilligan’s Island.

    Shot out of a Canon…

In 1979, the Musical Heritage Society (remember them?), then at 1991 Broadway in New York, issued an LP (MHS 1060, licensed from the French label Erato) with not one, but three, pieces by Johann Pachelbel (1653-1706). I bring this up……

I’ve heard the Gilligan’s Grace bit — it’s another good one. Meredith’s looked for this piece for years. She’s another poor abused cellist who was forced to play Canon one time too many.

There are some classic replacement tune jokes out there. It’s a bit of an in-joke, because it’s part of the Jewish liturgy, but Adon Olom can be sung to a huge array of tunes, from Final Jeopardy to the Battle Hymn of the Republic.

This is priceless! I’m always hearing songs in other songs. Now it will never end.

Terry - that is fabulous! I can so relate. I have to blog about it now! Thank you. Very, VERY fun and funny. (My seventh grader plays viola.)

  8. Terry Says:

Cool, A. I’m not familiar with the tune for it, but I enjoyed reading the words. Thanks for the link.

Glad you liked it, Sage and Jill!

  9. Natalie Says:

This was great! I just sent it to my sister who has been a cellist FOREVER.

  10. Terry Says:

Cool, Natalie - hope she likes it!
