Who you gonna call?
If you talk on a cell phone, you can now support a worthy cause while you do it. Planned Parenthood has teamed up with Working Assets Wireless to offer Planned Parenthood Wireless, a cell phone service that will give 10% of your bill back to Planned Parenthood for a cost on par with other providers. PPW used the nationwide Sprint Network.
The current special is a free camera phone with 200 anytime minutes and unlimited nights and weekends for $29.99. In addition to other packages they also offer a family plan for exactly what I’m currently paying with T-Mobile. They’ll even buy out your old contract if you want to switch.
Remember, with number portability, you can take your old phone number with you.
Has anyone tried this or any other “give when you pay” ventures? I’d love to know what you think of it.

I have a smidgen of my Target Visa purchases allocated to the private high school I attended back in the Pleistocene era; this is about the only such program I use, though there are plenty of others out there. For example: Working Assets, which started out as a left-leaning mutual fund, now offers long-distance and wireless service, plus their own credit card. CGHill(Quote)
I didn’t know WA did wireless… odd, really. We’ve been on WA Long Distance for years, so you’d think they’d have pitched it to us. Ahistoricality(Quote)
I’d heard that Target did that, CG, but I don’t have a card with them. During the “back to school” shopping season, Office Depot lets me designate a school to receive a small percentage. This was the first I’ve seen with cell phones, though. Terry(Quote)
Have you been happy with their long distance, A? I’m thinking of looking into this. I do all my long distance on my cell these days. Terry(Quote)
The only “give when you play” program I use is EScript, which pays a portion of all my credit card purchases to the local charities that I designate. I get a report each year of what was given (plus some of the items I buy at the grocery store automatically pay a portion into it too. Like Silk soy products).
I wonder about the cellphone service… Debra(Quote)
The WA long distance is fine. It’s probably a bit more expensive than the most aggressive deals we could get elsewhere, but the national and international plans are reasonably competitive; enough so that we stopped using the cheapo bulk calling card we’d been using for some of our long distance. They use Sprint cables, so the actual quality of use is pretty much what you get anywhere else.
And it’s kinda fun filling out the “vote for which charities get the money” every year. Ahistoricality(Quote)
Welcome Debra, and thanks for commenting! I’m not familiar with EScript, but I’ll look into it. The only one I’ve used is a grocery card from Albertsons that gives a percentage to the youth orchestra. It would be great to be able to designate to others.
That’s great to know, A. I’m going to look into WA. Terry(Quote)
