Murder is just fine if you’re already born

Dr. George Tiller was assassinated this morning while he ushered at his church in Wichita. Operation Rescue cries crocodile tears.

Don’t shave for me, Argentina

“Trimming the bush to make the tree seem taller.” WTF Gillette??? “If you want to see a tree you shouldn’t have to blaze a trail to get there.” Well, just call me Daniel Boone then, because finding my way has never been a problem. Absolutely no one should be pressured to shave, period. Not legs, [...]

Meet my new baby

Look who followed me home from the Humane Society today.  She’s 8 weeks old and is as yet unnamed.  We’re calling her Moxie for now, but that will no doubt change in the next few days. Edgar is fascinated, and Rogue couldn’t care less, which is the best I can hope for. She’s going to [...]

I can has kitteh?

With a lot of prodding from Meredith and Tony, I’m considering getting a kitten.  I’ve lost 2 cats in 3 years, Shadow and Storm, with 18-year-old Rogue my only remaining feline companion, and as she ages I’m forced to deal the idea of another loss.  I’ve thought about adopting an adult cat, but I worry [...]

A justice for all?

I’ve been watching the brouhaha over Sonia Sottomayor with a little bit of caution and a great deal of cynicism.  Yes, she’s a woman.  Yes, she’s Hispanic.  I got that part.  Now tell me where she stands on Roe v. Wade and the Lily Ledbetter case. Liberal women are being patted on the head by [...]

All growed up

Sunday was Meredith’s graduation from Pacific Lutheran University.  It hardly seems possible, but she’s 22 years old and preparing to move across the country for grad school at Emory University in Atlanta.  It was a bittersweet day for me, happy for her success and plans for the future, happy for the presence of both Tony [...]

730 days and counting

Two years ago today I smoked my last cigarette.  In the time since, that’s 1,460 packs I haven’t bought.  At $4.50 a pack (WA tax is sky high and going higher), that’s $6,570 I haven’t spent on nicotine. I used those savings to fund my college degree. Pretty fair trade-off, in my opinion.

What was old is new again

The hard drive on my 6 year old laptop has been terminally ill for the last month, culminating in seizures and finally a coma yesterday. So off I went to Best Buy for a new one (who knew I could get 160 gig for $70!) and plugged it in. After a loooong evening of reinstalling [...]

Award and meme

Thanks to Sherry Chandler for the Kreativ Blogger Award! To follow tradition I’m to choose 7 things I like.  I’m sure mine are far more mundane than the choices of others so honored, but what the heck. Phone calls and Skype chats with my kids. Romantic suspense novels that make me believe, even for a [...]

Please hold for the next available operator

It seems I’ve spent most of my life on hold.   And the worst of it is, I’m the one who put me there.  For decades I’ve been waiting for the magical combination of events that would give me permission to stop waiting and start living, and surprise, surprise – it never happened.  First I waited [...]
