Rottsherapsomatian

Edgar’s parentage has been a 8 year subject of debate at the vet’s office, as well as at home. So when Julie told us she’d ordered a doggie DNA test for her Sammy, I decided to do the same for Edgar. The test arrived 3 weeks ago, with a swab for rubbing the inside of his check. Meredith did the honors, and I sent the kit off the next day.
Turns out my Newfie isn’t a Newf at all. He’s a Rottweiler.
According to the results, he’s 1/2 to 2/3 Rottweiler, 1/5 German Shepard, 1/5 Lhasa Apso, 1/10 Dalmatian, and 1/10 Rhodesian Ridgeback. Nothing here explains the shoulder hump or the long curly fur, so I’m a bit skeptical. And the Dalmatian and little Lhasa Apso are just bizarre.
But believing he was a Newfoundland was a good thing, because if I’d known he was a Rottweiler, I never would have brought him home. Their aggressive tendencies scare me. He’s still the same loving animal he was before we did the test. But it’s fun to know.

I don’t know much about breeds, but he looks a lot more like a Newf or Lab than a Rott. Also, those parentages add up to 1.1-1.4 dogs…. maybe that’s where the hump comes from?
The funny math is my fault – bad rounding. The 1/5 is actually 10-20% and the 1/10 is 10% or less. Though I do like the idea of that hump being an extra .1-.4 dog. :)
I work for a company that sells Dog DNA Test (www.dog-dna.com) and I can tell you from experience that it is really hard to tell from looking at a dog what the breed out come will be. We did the test on one of my co-workers dogs about a year ago and could have sworn that Jaco was a German Shepperd mix but to our shock he ended up being Rottweiler Chow Chow mix. We never would have guessed.
