Project: Healthy

This has been a “one step forward, three steps back” kind of week.  For anyone keeping track, my weight loss total went down 2 lbs instead of up this week, which is very discouraging.  That’s because my daughter and my therapist beat it into my head that feeling guilty for eating 400 calories a day [...]

Project: Healthy

As of this morning, I officially hit my first weight loss goal—I’ve lost 15 lbs in 6 weeks. Next goal, to lose another 15 (total 30) by the end of March when I have my next medical check up.
I know some of you are worried about me, so I told the doctor that I’m [...]

Project:(Un)Healthy

This week I’ve gotten very, very frustrated.  In the first 3 weeks I lost 10 lbs by pushing my calorie consumption down to 500 per day instead of the 1200 – 1500 the doctor recommended.  But now, in attempting to bring my calorie count up to a level I can live with long term, I’m [...]

Project: Healthy

Week 3: 4 lbs.
Total: 10 lbs.
I’ve decided that instead of doing these updates as posts and making people feel obligated to comment, I’m moving my tally into the sidebar. I’m only write a post for significant events.

Project: Healthy

The diet is still going well. With Julie here for a visit it’s harder to keep my carb level down, because she does things like make me sticky toffee pudding, but it’s worth it. It was hard, but I ate one small piece and put the rest away.
I’m still not doing my time [...]

Project: Healthy

My dietary guidelines from my doctor:
1200-1500 calories per day
150 g. carbs or less
low to no fat
max. 2 whole grain starch servings (piece of bread, etc)
max. 2 fruit servings
max. 2 dairy servings
no potatoes
What I’m finding is that it’s nearly impossible to get to 1200 calories with only 2 starches a day – I’m averaging closer to [...]

Welcome 2010

Every January since 2005 I’ve made the same resolution, to treat my body as Wabi-Sabi.
“Wabi-Sabi is a beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete.
It is a beauty of things modest and humble.
It is a beauty of things unconventional”
–Leonard Koren, Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers Poets & Philosophers
But that can’t be the case this year, though it [...]

Black Bible Belt

Chuck Norris once again opens his mouth and shows that his brain is Missing In Action.  The acolyte of Mike Huckabee has been graced with a column on the right wing website “Human Events;  Headquarters of the Conservative Underground,” the better from which to lecture us on the evils of abortion.  He knows, because God [...]

3 steps forward, 2 steps back

Since I wrote last Monday, I’ve done very little except sleep and heal. So, feeling pretty good last night, I ventured out into the world for Asian food.  And ended up being Car #3 in a 4 car pile-up.
Luckily, no one was seriously injured. But my knee took a beating in the collision, [...]

All done

Knee surgery accomplished.  I’m back home and, thanks to some really great pain pills, feeling pretty good.  I’m to stay completely off it for 3 days, then take it easy for a week, but then it should be good as new.  Better, even.  I look forward to being able to walk more than a block, [...]
